Do you know? Blueberry as officinal plant.
In the past, blueberry was a highly appreciated officinal plant. Blueberry f4uits are used in traditional European medicine for almost thousand years. Their use was described by German botanists Hildegarde von Bingen, who lived in the 12th century, and Hyeronimus Bock from the 16th century. Decoction (brew) from dried blueberries was traditionally used as adstringent in healing diarrhoea and dysentery. Adstringent is a substance decreasing permeability of the skin and mucosa; it thus reduces inflammatory reaction and sensitivity to external influences. Concoctions from blueberry were also used for healing scurvy (disease due to lack of vitamin C) and stopping lactation (secretion of milk) with breast-feeding mothers. Blueberries were dried in the sun and teas and syrups were made from them. Blueberries are a precious source of vitamins A, B, and C, iron, and calcium, therefore they have antioxidative effect on the body. Due to their antioxidative effect they slow down aging processes, reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and also emerging of cancer. They also cause the improvement of coordination and balance.
